So Much From Various Themes - Something for Everyone!

On this Memorial Day holiday we remember those who gave all for our country’s freedom. I often wonder if we remember and live appreciatively enough for the sacrifices made.

The day was very busy with many photography themes captured.

My day began by checking for the prothonotary warbler(s) that I have not seen since the rain and flooding began more than a week ago. It took some looking, but eventually I found two males and recorded images in various settings.

After returning from the warbler search I received a text message asking about a very large snake. Due to its size I wondered if maybe we were discussing a ribbon snake - a species I have not yet seen. When I was asked to relocate the snake for the snake’s safety, I quickly agreed. Eventually it was determined this was not a ribbon snake, but a very large garter snake. With twists in its body the snake was measuring in excess of 39-inches. I would not be surprised if this garter snake stretched to 40-inches - certainly the largest garter snake I have ever seen.

Before I relocated the garter snake I paddled at Sweet Marsh. I was hoping to find and photograph fragrant water lily blossoms, and that happened. As I paddled I also watched a whitetail deer splashing across the water to cattails.

I then headed out to relocate the snake. Enroute I photographed prairie smoke (Grandfather’s Whiskers).

Before releasing the snake I stopped for a killdeer that posed for me.

Eventually the snake was released. And when my day was about done I noticed I had a passenger. Before eliminating it, I photographed it… a wood tick.
