Practicing Patience

I have mentioned in the past how my wife and I have planted some ground in CRP pollinator habitat. In essence, we are trying to do something I have wanted to do for years - create a prairie.

This summer may not have been the best timing for prairie planting. We have had very little rain, temperatures have been hot, the ground is hard as a rock, and nothing is promoting germination. I would be lying if I said I have not been discouraged as I see our overgrown weed patch. In fact, if you drove by it and did not wander around to find my half-dozen plants with blossoms, you might think I made a wasteful mistake.

Yet, there is hope. A few of the many expensive seeds that fell on dry soil have germinated. At least four species are producing blossoms with another nearing the flower stage. And best of all, one of the plants blooming today is not too common around here - the white prairie clover.

Following is what is flowering. I will be patient. Hopefully this ground will eventually explode with prairie grasses and prairie plants. I can hardly wait, but will.
