Connecting and Gratitude

As I was driving home from a few much needed minutes on the river tonight I explained to Kristy how much I enjoy our little slice of earth. We have the river, the island, the cabin, and the paddling all so close. And, each time I go out I see something different. We have a steady supply of flora and fauna to fill my “Nature Fix” needs that help keep me sane.

While thinking about how fortunate we are, I think of the times when other “outdoor” people have insinuated that I may be out often, but not venturing too far from the Wapsie or Sweet Marsh (when it has water). The comments were taken almost as a negative toward my outdoor experiences. No, I don’t often travel too far away - work and other commitments keep me close. But I do get out often and I do experience great satisfaction from my local outings. In fact, while I really enjoy traveling further away and the rewards that come from distance and new territories to explore, I can honestly say that I feel less like a guest and more connected when I paddle my favorite locations close to home.

Learning to connect and appreciate what I have near me every day has brought about a feeling of contentment. I no longer feel like a hamster in a wheel waiting for my next big travel or adventure. Sure, I think about other “wild” places, but I am content to know that those times will come. Enjoying the here, enjoying the now, connecting with the Wapsie or Sweet Marsh, or other local areas create a relaxation and satisfaction each time I am out. Our little slice of earth that we are caring for is something I am so grateful for.

If you have read my “deep thoughts” this far, you deserve to see some of the views I enjoyed tonight. Details are in the captions.
