How About a Bowl or Depression or Something???

For several years I have been watching a bald eagle nest expand. This one must weigh tons already. (The view from this angle minimizes the size of this nest.)

One detail I always assumed was the actual eagle-incubating and raising area was a bowl or depression in the middle of the nest. I incorrectly thought the young birds had something stopping them from falling to the ground. Apparently that is not the case - at least not for this nest!

Note: I did have permission to access this nest on private property.
