Peak-A-Boo Bald Eagle (and Repetition Explained)

With the current bald eagle courtship and nesting season well underway, eagle observations are frequent and sometimes, like today, more interesting than routine.

I found today’s featured bald eagle on the backside of a conifer, almost appearing as if it was playing “Hide and Seek” with me. While the bird did its best to hide from me, it did not take flight to avoid me. With an eagle on perch and me ready with my camera, I shot a few photos.

Initially the eagle may have had the opinion if it could not see me, then maybe I could not see it. That wasn’t the case and the partially hidden eagle allowed for interesting compositions. Eventually, the eagle allowed a clear view and more images were recorded.

Before I share eagle pictures, I would like to discuss frequent bald eagle pictures. It has been a number of years ago when bald eagles were seldom seen. When I did find one, you can be sure I did my best to photograph the bird - often at a great distance. The images were seldom anything special, but the photos featured a rare bald eagle and that was special.

Now with bald eagles so prevalent, opportunities to photograph them come regularly. And, quite often I am able to shoot eagle photos at close range. Sometimes I wonder if my photos then become stagnant when they feature the same species - in this case bald eagles. Then I think of other species that I used to take for granted that would always be easy to photograph - red-headed woodpeckers for example, or maybe monarch butterflies - but now those species are a challenge to find. Never should we assume a species will last forever or always be around. So, if or when I have an opportunity to photograph a bald eagle, I will likely do it. Hopefully viewers understand.
