I Wonder Where It Went

One day last week I ducked while behind my windshield when a short-eared owl nearly hit my truck. Dusk was well on its way and I would guess the owl was preparing for some time on the hunt. (By the way, short-eared owls are an uncommon observation in this area.)

After the owl took flight the bird was immediately harassed by a half-dozen or so crows. The bullying was intense as I watched the owl and crows fly to the southeast. Eventually I lost sight of both species. Since then I have been trying to figure out where the owl may have found relief from the crows, but I have not yet located that spot.

This afternoon I did some more owl-looking after work, but did not find the short-eared owl, or any owls for that matter. I did find ring-necked pheasants and an American tree sparrow - all out scratching for something to eat.

Hopefully I will see the owl again this winter, and I certainly hope if I do the bird will be within camera range.
