What Is This?

My work schedule today did not allow time to go out to shoot photos. Instead I created a mystery still-life of sorts. Do you recognize what this is? Scroll down for the answer.

This image features a naturally dried earth star fungus hung vertically against a black background. Once photographed, I then removed the color data to create this harshly lit still life image.
