Cedar Tree Info

Across the Midwest we have a ready supply of trees growing with a mistaken identity. Most people know this tree as an eastern red cedar. Scientifically the tree is Juniperus virginiana - a tree species in the juniper family.

Cedar trees readily grow in ditches, fence rows, and prairies. Often their population is controlled with the use of fire. The species is tolerant of poor soil conditions, drought, wind and salt. Eastern red cedars are also known for providing ideal habitat for wildlife. I personally inspect many cedars each winter in search of saw-whet owls.

While many may not appreciate cedar trees, I have a fondness for this easy to grow species. Some are in my windbreak with hopes they host wildlife in the future.

Like other trees, cedar trees have some carbon sequestration qualities as well, albeit less than other species.

(Note: Cedar trees can disrupt natural environments due to their easy-to-grow characteristics.)

While studying cedar trees I found this collection of red berries in the crotch of one tree. I wonder if the pile was created by birds, squirrels, or maybe chipmunks.
