Found Today

Today Kristy and I drove through four counties in our travels. During that time on the road I was surprised to find and photograph a male and female Northern Bobwhite (members of the quail family). (Please do not ask the specific location.)

How or why these birds were present where I found them I am unable to explain. The birds were located in an area where hunting is not allowed, in scrub/edge habitat suitable for upland birds. In the past I have photographed red fox, ring-necked pheasants, and gray partridges in the same area, along with seeing whitetail deer there too. And, as far as I know, the closest human residents do not raise birds.

So is it possible these were introduced birds? I suppose. Is it also possible they are wild birds? I think that is possible too. What I do know is I was able to photograph them before they flew away to cover. I will continue to watch the area when I pass through it. Maybe I will see these birds again and maybe I will not.

Woodpecker Hole Update: Yesterday I shared an image of a pileated woodpecker hole in a tree. My granddaughter and I watched the woodpecker working on the tree. Today all of the bird work was being occupied by a very comfortable fox squirrel.
