Thanksgiving Traditions and More

Thanksgiving 2023 has included traditions and a non-typical activity. Let’s begin with the non-typical.

Yesterday afternoon I received an unexpected phone call about an injured bald eagle on and along a highway. Our regular Thanksgiving activities were paused as two of my grandkids joined me to capture the bald eagle. When I arrived I learned our job was only to capture the injured bald eagle. All rehab details were completed by the “finders.” Once caught the eagle was transported to Wild Thunder rehab for care. Needless to say, not only my grandkids, but I think the folks who helped with the capture and move to the pet taxi. experienced something most do not do on their Thanksgiving holiday. Many thanks to those who reported this bird and Tracy and team at Wild Thunder.

Then early this morning Kristy and I, along with both of our kids and their families migrated with hundreds of others to Wapsie Pines for the annual great Christmas tree hunt. We found a very pretty tree and with the help of the grandkids have it up and decorated already. As we waited in the truck and then at the tree farm we took a few fun pictures.

Finally, as we searched the tree farm for the ideal tree I found several earthstar fungi. I photographed them and explained their existence to the grandkids. If my memory is correct, I have found earthstar fungi before among the trees and explained them to the kids. They may have had higher priorities… like decorating a tree… on their minds and forgotten this valuable information.
