Dang Squirrel

A couple/few days ago I photographed a skirmish between a fox squirrel and a pileated woodpecker at the pileated woodpecker’s hole in a tree. Witnessing how the pileated woodpecker reacted when the squirrel held its ground made me wonder… would the woodpecker return.

For the past couple of days not only hasn’t the woodpecker returned, but I have not heard it anywhere in the area. That absence is noticeable and concerning. Has my time with the woodpecker ended? Turf battles must be commonplace for these birds… do they give up so easily?

I will continue to watch and listen, but maybe not to the extent I have been recently. In the event Mr. Pileated Woodpecker returns, i will put more effort into photos. Time will tell.
