So Similar, But A Significant Difference

During my frequent outdoor exploration efforts I am always on the lookout for something interesting to study and probably photograph. Many, many times I have found owl pellets below roosts - things I consider interesting.

Owl pellets are the undigested remains of prey species ingested by the owl. Pellets come out of the owls’ mouths, not the other end. Owl pellets are gray with fur and bones visible, usually along with gray matter.

Today I found the hair ball pictured above. I almost picked it up to put it in my pocket for further study, likely with my grandkids. Before grabbing the fur and bone ball I sensed I was not preparing to pickup an owl pellet. No, this was a look-alike furball and probably coyote poop.

At home I Googled coyote scat and my photograph matches “old” coyote poop.

These furry, boney, gray balls are so very similar, yet there is a significant difference. One is an owl pellet and one is scat. Please see my photo of an owl pellet below for reference.
