Why So Difficult
Why is photographing lightning, with any degree of quality so difficult? Could it be that the photographer must align lightning with an acceptable foreground and background, achieve focus, guess exposure on varying scenes, and have the shutter open at the exact split second in time when the lightning bolt is visible? Let’s not forget the safety component. Maybe that is why I came home disappointed tonight.
There was constant lightning, with most of it behind clouds. Then every once in a while there would be a visible bolt of lightning. Even with various techniques employed I still managed only a few lightning documentary images. Clearly I need more practice (and more cloud to ground lightning to practice with.)
