Cleanliness Observation

As I watched and photographed a variety of bird species today, I noticed that each of the species I was watching appeared to be very clean. Then I considered the sandhill cranes that appear brown but are actually gray. What is the difference? How can bright white birds that feed in almost the same environments as cranes stay clean while cranes cannot?

Trumpeter swans are like cranes. Though they are bright white, in time swans also appear dirty. American white pelicans feed in the same waters, yet stay clean. What is the reason behind this?

Following is a sampling of images from today’s outing.

For the first time in my life I was able to watch as a beaver debarked a tree limb. As I watched, I shot some photos.
