Thank You Wapsipinicon River

Over the past few days plenty of rain has fallen across our area of Iowa. So much so that the Wapsipinicon River near our cabin quickly rose and spilled out of its bank, and all of this just before the Independence Day holiday. Kristy and I had pretty much written off any river activities due to high water. Imagine my surprise when I checked river levels today. The ol’ Wapsie was still a bit high, but falling rapidly to acceptable levels. In fact, the water levels had dropped enough that I took my boat out and almost a dozen paddlers were enjoying the river. Many of us appreciate that the river will be a source of fun for the holiday and not a headache.

As for wildlife on the river, I saw a large soft shell turtle, one great blue heron, and many painted turtles.
