A Mutual Trust?

Time didn’t take away my urge to photograph timber rattlesnakes. You might remember that I first went looking for them last week. Today after work I again drove to my favorite spot to look for timber rattlesnakes and this time I was successful. I cannot explain why, but there is something exciting about working next to/with an animal that could possibly kill you with one quick bite. Today’s human/reptile interaction was very different than others I have experienced.

I had an open-ended day to search for and photograph snakes. After finding this first snake, I remained in the area for several hours so that I could shoot the snake in different poses and in various light. For those wondering, there was at least one other timber rattlesnake in the area along with an adult garter snake.

Back to the snake… As I mentioned I stayed in the sight of the rattlesnake for several hours. I honestly believe that the snake either became accustomed to my presence or decided (if snakes are capable of decision making) that I was not a threat. This snake moved around the rocky area – up and down and back and forth without hesitation. Finally, it decided to slither up out of the rocks, across the trail, and into the brush on the opposite side. Interestingly, it made the location transition by crawling right past me. Not once did it rattle or coil. I really think the snake had no fear of me. But then again, when you are as big as this snake was, I don’t suppose it has many predators/threats to worry about. For those wondering, I was not afraid of the reptile. I watched and photographed it, but had no fear. As the snake was crawling across the trail I did stop one biker from approaching too close. That fellow was really surprised to know he was in the vicinity of timber rattlesnakes and he certainly didn’t know how big they can grow.

From a scientific point of view, as you study the photos, notice the indicators of a pit viper – triangular shaped head, pits on the face, and vertical pupils. If you see this pattern, know that you are close/too close to a venomous snake. Following are samples of the many timber rattlesnake images I recorded today.
