An Early Antler Shed and Swans!
A week or more ago I mentioned in a post about seeing trumpeter swans on the Cedar River. This past weekend Kristy and I thought we saw swans again when we crossed the Cedar. I had to know for certain, so after work today I drove to Cedar Falls to scan the river. My first pass over the river yielded no swans. I knew it wouldn’t; I saw the swans with Canada geese in a field north of Cedar Falls. Not one to give up early, I went to look for the saw-whet owl. I did not find the owl, but I did find my first antler shed of the year. It is a nice antler and in great shape. It should be; I would bet it was dropped not long ago.
After finding the antler shed I went back to the river. Since it was getting late, I had a pretty good idea the geese and swans had either returned from feeding north of town, or soon would. I made the hike to the river and sure enough, two swans were sitting on the Cedar River with hundreds of Canada geese and mallards. Because of the snow and late time of day, there wasn’t much light. I did manage a couple of acceptable trumpeter swan images out of the many I shot.
