It does not happen often, but tonight when I photographed small critters I did not know for sure what they were. Each of the three species stumped me, at least for now.
This creature might possibly be a metamorphosis in progress. The “thing” was moving on the bottom of a leaf, possibly preparing to attach to the leaf from the end pointing up. (EDITED: This is a “Tortoise Beetle Larva (in defensive posture).”
I watched two of these little critters on the top of a purple coneflower. My best guess is this an immature grasshopper. (EDITED: Jagged Ambush Bug)
Finally, I found this damselfly that, so far, I have not been able to identify. (EDITED: Lyre-tipped Spreadwing Damselfly)
