Things I Saw Today

Imagine my surprise when I, after hearing non-stop excited avian chatter due to two cats sitting below a tree, found the source to be a red-headed woodpecker…in our neighborhood! I saw a red-headed woodpecker on a light pole a few days ago, but assumed it was passing through. Now I am not so sure.

It would be nice to have yet another woodpecker species stopping by our feeder. The woodpecker list would then include: red-headed, hairy, downy, red-bellied, yellow-belly sapsucker and flicker. If we could, and this would be a long-shot, attract a pileated woodpecker, we could then say we had seen all common Iowa woodpeckers in our yard.

Tonight I went boating on the Wapsipinicon River. The level is still higher than normal, but it has dropped dramatically from a few days ago. Thank goodness!

On my way home I stopped by a local prairie area. The setting sun makes even the most common wildflowers look good.
