A Very Interesting Day

Due to a work-related exercise this evening, I had the morning free to do what I wanted, and I chose to go kayaking on the Wapsipinicon River. My first observation was how interesting the river valley looked, not because of fog, but due to dust from heavy trucks on the road heading to the quarry next to the river that created a fog-like effect.

The highlight of the morning was seeing this young raccoon watching a kayaker paddle nearby from the comfort of a log. The second picture shows you the log as I first saw it. Somehow I managed to see the raccoon peering out of the log from the comfort of my kayak seat.

This afternoon some very pretty hairy vetch caught my attention momentarily, until the mosquitoes attacked.

Early this evening a friend and I coordinated an exercise with Air Care – a downed helicopter exercise. This picture shows the helicopter landing. What the image clearly reveals were the countless mosquitoes and gnats that recorded as out of focus dark spots. It was terrible.

Finally, our ruby-throated hummingbirds seem to be cooperating with each other at the feeders now. This male ate without squabbling with other hummingbirds.
