The Little Places Are Special Too
I am a lucky man. Over my lifetime I have had the opportunity to travel to many locales I consider gems in our country. I’ve backpacked, hiked, paddled, and biked in beautiful places and returned with countless memories. Each adventure has had its high points that I remember fondly.
Yet, sometimes its the little places that make a huge difference too. For example, this morning I drove to our cabin on the shores of the nearly frozen Wapsipinicon River in Frederika. I did not expect to see anything, but when I rounded the first curve on the winding road to our getaway, I spotted six trumpeter swans resting on the ice along the open water. Right there, not far from town or cabins, in a quiet little spot, there were swans – a complete family of two adults and four cygnets.
Yes, I get to travel and will continue to leave the area in search of more memory-making experiences in the backcountry, but the little places not too far from home are special too – like Frederika.
